Mobiliar Lab Lecture 2022: Bruno Merz
How does an extreme event not become a disaster? Methodological developments for better flood risk management.

Referent: Bruno Merz
In his presentation, Bruno Merz explored the question of how an extreme flood does not become a catastrophe. In doing so, he also focused on flood risk management, a central research topic of the Mobiliar Lab. Using the example of the Ahr river, he impressively showed that extreme events cannot easily be extrapolated from "normal" events.
Prof. Dr.-Ing. Bruno Merz heads the Hydrology Section at the Helmholtz Centre Potsdam, German Research Centre for Geosciences, and he is Professor of Engineering Hydrology and Management of Geo Risks at the University of Potsdam. His research topics are hydrological extremes, risk analysis and risk management. His work includes the development of vulnerability models and their integration into flood risk models, the analysis of the spatio-temporal dynamics of risk, the study of extreme flood events and the development of coupled models for risk assessment.
